Sketch of the Elmira valley circa 1862. In the foreground is the Junction Canal.  The Chemung Rivers is on the left  and Barracks #3, which served initially as a Union recruit training barracks from 1861-64, converted to a prisoner of war camp was located next to the river beyond the town.

Timeline

1861-1865  Designated one of three Military Depots for mustering and recruiting in New York State  (Elmira, Albany, NYC)

 

1861-1865 - Musters a total 24 Infantry, 4 Artillery, 6 Cavalry units totaling 20,796 officers and men, plus additional recruits, draftees and substitutes

 

1863 -Designated HQ, Western District of NYS for administration of draft enrollment operations

 

1864 - Commenced operation as a prisoner of war camp with arrival of first prisoners Jul 6 1864

 

1865 – Depot and POW camp officially closed August 1865
